Fjellskål – 50 Years at the Fish Market
This year, Fjellskål marks 50 years at Fisketorget in Bergen.
The story began in 1976, when brothers Øystein and Ragnar Fjellskål opened their stall at the Fish Market. With deep knowledge of fish and shellfish, hard work, and an unwavering belief in quality, they built a name that would eventually become an institution for seafood in Bergen. For more than four decades, the brothers stood side by side at Fisketorget, sharing their passion for seafood with both locals and visitors from around the world.
Over five decades, Fjellskål has evolved alongside the market and the city around it. What began as a single stall at the Fish Market has grown into what Fjellskål is today: a seafood destination and a showcase for Norwegian seafood.
Today, we are located in the Mathallen at Fisketorget, where the restaurant and seafood shop sit side by side. The counter features more than 70 species of fish and shellfish from the Norwegian coast, while the aquariums hold live Norwegian lobster, king crab, snow crab, and langoustine. The ingredients guests see in the counter or aquariums often make their way directly to Fjellskål’s kitchen and on to the table in the restaurant.
For fifty years, Fjellskål has been part of life at Fisketorget – a place where knowledge of seafood, pride in raw ingredients, and the meeting between people continue to be at the heart of everything we do.
From a single stall to a seafood destination. This year, we celebrate 50 years at Fisketorget.
